Lencois Maranhenses National Park is an area on Brazil’s north coast of the Atlantic that is protected. It is a vast desert landscape made up of white, tall sand dunes as well as lagoons of rainwater. Two of the largest of these lagoons are:

Lencois Maranhenses National Park is a vast area full of undulating and swept sand dunes in between lakes formed at certain times of the year. This result is lakes of midnight-blue and offset by the brilliant white dunes that make for a photographer’s paradise. This entire area can be explored:

• On horses
• On wheels

By traveling north-east, you can spend several days exploring this area and if you have the time this is something you will not regret.

State of Marahao

This National Park is in the Brazilian state of Marahao. Lencois Maranhenses means “bedsheets” in Portuguese due to the spectacular landscape that rolls out for miles. It is far less visited or even known as part of Brazil and does not get the tourism that Brazil’s other wonder of nature is, IguacuFalls. But it is in many ways far more extraordinary or dramatic.

Best way to reach the park

The way to best reach this park is to get to the city of Sao Luis which is a previous colonial city that is 4 hours from Lencois Maranhenses. Airplane flights from around the country land regularly and once you are in this city, every hotel, hostel or pousdad will make the arrangements for a transfer for you. There are also buses those pick-up tourists from where they are staying at 7 am every morning.
